What is haute couture?

Haute couture (which literally means “high sewing”) traces its roots back to the court of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. However, it was formalized in France when English-born designer Charles Worth established his Paris atelier in 1858.

Haute couture represents entirely handmade garments, crafted from the finest materials, and created by accomplished artisans. Each design is unique. Prices can range from $10,000. to several hundred thousand dollars depending on on their intricacy, craftsmanship, and materials.

Who buys and/or wears hcouture clothing? Hollywood stars wear haute couture to prestigious events like the Academy Awards, Cannes Film Festival, and Met Gala. Royalty and aristocrates have long been patrons of couture. They commission one-of-a-kind pieces for state banquets, galas, and official functions. Private clients with substantial financial resources appreciate the artistry behind couture. Some fashion-forward individuals invest in haute couture as a form of self-expression. They appreciate the fusion of tradition and innovation. Bloggers, influencers, and stylists may wear couture to create buzz and inspire trends.

What is Rive Gauche?
Rive Gauche is a line of ready-to-wear fashion that was released under the Yves Saint Laurent name. It was created by Yves Saint Laurent himself as a high quality fashion line that was more accessible than the haute couture line. Rive Gauche has since become a well-known brand in the fashion industry, with a range of products including handbags, perfumes and colognes.

What is prêt–à–porter (RTW)?
Pret-a-Porter ( RTW), French, are read-to-wear clothing made in standard sizes. RTW designer collections are targeted to the demands of masses at more affordable prices than haute couture. Ready-to-wear clothing is usually more informal and practical than haute couture that you can wear everyday.  Pret-a-porter is more affordable because it is not made by hand (labor intensive) for a specific person or made from as expensive fabrics and trims as haute couture. Most designers and fashion houses produce pret-a-porter (RTW) to expand their business. RTW designer collections enable more women to own something designed by a famous designer and/or fashion house.
