Should you wear a long dress to a museum gala?

Should you wear a long dress to a museum gala? I am attending a gala at an art museum in September to honor a museum supporter of the arts. It will be cocktails followed by dinner but no dancing.

A museum gala at an art museum does not call for a long dress. Floor length dresses are usually optional today at most events (even black tie) unless specified on an invitation. Cocktail attire would be more appropriate for an art gallery or art museum gala such as a dressy cocktail dress or pants with a dressy top. An arty accessory could add some style to your outfit such as jewelry designed by an artist, statement shoes, a fabulous evening bag or a fascinator. In other words don’t be afraid to show some creativity in what you are wearing.
