Do I need to wear a tie to a graduation ceremony?

Do I need to wear a tie to a graduation ceremony? I’m wearing a navy suit (pants and blazer) with a white shirt and tan shoes with a tan belt. Since it’s more of a formal event, should I wear a tie as well? If so, what color tie exactly? Can I wear a floral tie?

A graduation ceremony is to reward you for your academic achievement. A navy suit with a white shirt, tan shoes, tan belt and a tie (can be removed) would look very appropriate and stylish.

A classic tie such as a solid color, stripe or small print with navy blue in it will go with your navy blue suit and is probably a safe choice. A floral tie can work if the design is on the smaller size. Congratulations!

Does a guy need a suit or blazer for a wedding?

A suit or blazer is more acceptable attire for a male wedding guest. Traditional attire for a male attending a wedding is a dark (gray, black or navy) suit with a white shirt and tie. Unfortunately not everyone follows the traditional rules.

If you can’t afford a suit or blazer wear a tie with your black sweater, white shirt and black trousers. Suits and blazers (at least one) are essentials and great investments that you will wear for many years.

Dressing appropriately for events such as a wedding shows respect.
