Can I wear a mermaid style dress to my boyfriend's father's birthday?

Can I wear a mermaid style dress to my boyfriend’s father’s birthday? The party is taking place in Denmark in October and will be Black Tie. My boyfriend will be wearing a tux. I’m 35 and have a curvy but slim and toned figure. I am wondering if I can wear a blush/champagne colored mermaid dress with a deep neckline. I normally dress conservative, and despite the curve-revealing dress I still think I look elegant in it. I don’t know if this level of sexy/elegant is appropriate, or if the color is acceptable for an event in early October.

A mermaid style dress is definitely a show stopper and the dress you described a blush/champagne colored mermaid dress with a deep neckline sounds gorgeous.

However, something classier and more conservative would be more appropriate for your boyfriend’s father’s birthday party. There are many beautiful and sexy gowns without plunging necklines. A simple style dress is always elegant and allows the focus to be on you instead of your dress. Anything that is overtly sexy will be in poor taste.

A brighter, deeper color, than blush/champagne such as a jewel tone color, would look great in October. Keep away from any dress that is too low-cut, too tight, or too short. Pay attention to your hair and makeup.

Should the bottom of an evening gown touch the ground?
The bottom of an evening gown or floor length dresses varies depending on your height, width of the skirt bottom and style of skirt. An evening gown skirt should allow for walking without tripping and dancing without falling. Narrow skirts are usually a little shorter than full skirt hems so you can move around better.

What kind of dress do you wear to a formal event?
A black tie affair is considered a formal event. Years ago when you were invited to a black tie or formal event women were expected to wear a floor length gown. Today cocktail dresses are appropriate and considered more modern than long dresses for most black tie affairs / formal events. Exceptions might be a royal black tie affair or Presidential Ball when a floor length is correct. Dressy pants and tops are also appropriate black tie apparel today. If you know the hostess you may discuss what the expected attire is for the event. Choose on what suits you, your legs and your relative age.
