What is understated elegance?
Understated elegance means ultra plain & simple, stark minimalism, pared-down looks, basics that suit you, and quality not quantity. In other words it means taking care in choosing what you wear. It has nothing to do with how much money you have but it has to do with having good taste. Neutral colors of brown, beige, khaki and their shades and tints, combined or alone in outfits, shout understated, refined elegance. Colors such as buff, camel, oatmeal, tan, sand, biscuit, cream, ivory, ecru and mushroom send messages of earthy, stability, reliability, wholesome, quiet confidence, warmth, honesty and sincerity and are calm and relaxing. Neutral colors are very versatile and go with everything. Perfect colors for wardrobe building blocks. Combine simple designs in beautifully tailored pieces (that focus on you not the outfit) is the way to achieve an understated elegance look any season of the year wearing any colors. Keep in mind darker colors are more slimming than light colors.
Build A Basic Wardrobe
There is no perfect basic wardrobe that applies to all. A basic wardrobe takes into consideration lifestyle or clothing for all of our activities. If you are a hockey coach your wardrobe is going to be a lot different from a corporate lawyer’s. However when we choose a basic article of clothing it is something we should plan on wearing many times (getting our money’s worth). These items are like good investments since they will reward us many times in the future. When buying basics purchase quality pieces, not necessarily the most expensive.
Is a woman’s suit a good investment today?
A woman’s suit is a good investment if you have events to wear it to. For the high-powered woman executive it is a good idea to have some suits in your wardrobe for important meetings or after work get-togethers. A suit in the workplace can be a way to express your empowerment and show you mean business like your male colleagues. Most working women can get along today with some good-looking, tailored jackets that can be worn with skirts and pants for numerous functions. If you do not work you probably can get by without a suit if you have some great separates such as stylish jackets, skirts and pants in your closet. If you invest in a suit buy one with some style that you can wear to formal luncheons, dinners, cocktail parties and weddings. However you don’t see women wearing traditional, one color, 2 piece suits often.
