Most of us think of sapphires being blue but they  can come in (“fancy colors”) yellow, black, white, pink, green, purple, grey, orange and brown. Sapphires are considered one of the big three colored gemstones. The other being rubies and emeralds. Prices of sapphires range from low to ridiculously high, depending on the quality. The three most important things to consider when choosing a sapphire gemstone are color ((deep, rich, blue with violet undertones) with no glaring inclusions*, size measured in millimeters, not carats, and a well-proportioned cut. Faceting must be done at the proper angles, taking into account the light reflection unique to each gemstone.

Astrologists have called sapphires “wisdom stones”. Some say that they have mind healing abilities, stress relief powers, and might help with healing vision and hearing problems.
