Opera attire varies depending on the time of day, weekends or week night, opening nights etc. In general for matinees and week nights simple dresses (knee or midi length) such as a LBD or separates (skirt or pants and top) with appropriate jewelry are perfect. You might want to wear something more dressy for a Saturday or Sunday matinee such as velvet pants, skirt or dress. For weekend evenings (Friday or Saturday) a cocktail or floor length dress is appropriate. If you are invited to an opera opening most women wear evening gowns. If you are going to a live simulcast the dress code is probably casual.
