How to Dress for a Wedding: Men’s Suiting Guide
Men’s Suiting Guide
When it comes to dressing for a wedding, there can be a lot of stress that goes into the final outfit decision. Is what you chose too dressy? Not dressy enough? There is so much to be mindful of that it can become a bit overwhelming and sometimes even make you not want to go at all.
Weddings are supposed to be happy occasions, filled with joy and laughter and well wishes for a very happy couple. Don’t let your anxiety over picking the perfect outfit stop you from having a great time.
To help guide you to that perfect wedding outfit, we’ve come up with a few tips that will leave you confident in your outfit (and yourself) no matter what the occasion.
Tip #1: Wear something fitted, but not tight.
A suit should always be nicely fitted for your body type. This means you should be able to comfortably button all of the buttons on the jacket without it feeling like it’s going to burst and the seams.
I highly recommend tailoring your suits. Not only do they look best, but they keep well, which means you’ll get multiple uses out of it and undoubtedly get more bang for your buck. A nice, slim fitted suit never fails.
Tip #2: Don’t over accessorize.
If it isn’t your wedding, don’t try to be the star of the show. You’re a guest, and the groom should always be the best dressed, most handsome guy in the room. Still, accessories are a great way to dress up an otherwise drab outfit.
I recommend going with a wrist watch, preferably in gold, silver, or black so it matches your outfit nicely. A pocket square is another great choice. Just make sure that the color compliments your suit and it isn’t too crazy in pattern.
Tip #3: Remember a good pair of shoes.
Regardless of what you may think, shoes are a very important factor to any outfit. I recommend going with something timeless, such as a brown or black pair of Oxfords. Not only do they go with almost anything, but they are pretty comfortable.
Furthermore, shoes should always be shined and they should always, always match your belt. There is nothing worse than pairing a black pair of shoes with a brown belt. It immediately clashes against someone’s eye and it becomes noticeable.
Tip #4: Find your signature scent.
Cologne is great, especially if you have a scent that people can remember you by. That said, it is important that you not go overboard, especially at a wedding. This puts a lot of people in very close quarters. Just as smelling badly can be a bit unappealing, having too much cologne on can have the same effect. A small dab will do plenty for you; make sure to avoid spraying it in your hair and that you aren’t totally drenching yourself in it.
