Leylah Annie Fernandez
Leylah Annie Fernandez is a Canadian tennis player ranked #73 in the world (but not much longer) that seems to have come from nowhere to reach the finals of the 2021 US Tennis Open Tournament in New York.
She was born on September 6, 2002, in Montreal, Canada, and just turned 19 years old. Leylah is 5 feet 6 inches tall.
Leylah’s mother is a Filipino Canadian and her dad is Ecuadorian. She has two sisters Bianca Jolie who also plays tennis and Jodeci who works as a dentist.
Her father Jorge is a former soccer player and is her coach. He introduced her to sports at the age of 5 and she tried both football and track and field, but Leylah loved tennis the much more.
Leylah captured the 2019 French Open Girls Singles title and has been on the rise since turning professional in 2019.
In 2020 she entered her first Grand Slam competition at the Australian Open, but was eliminated in the opening round of the main draw. She made it to the WTA final at the 2020 Mexico Open but lost to eventual champion Heather Watson.
Leylah won her first WTA Tour singles title at the 2021 Monterrey Open.
At the 2021 US Open, she toppled Naomi Osaka then Angelique Kerber, former #1, Elina Svitolina #35 seed, and #2 seed Aryna Sabalenka.
Currently, she is pursuing a bachelor of business administration from Indiana University East. She is fluent in English, French and Spanish.
Leylah is very upbeat, patient and intelligent. “From a very young age, I knew I was able to beat anyone who is in front of me,”
