What color layer of fabric should I use on a print dress?
What color layer of fabric should I use on a print dress? I’m making my own dress, I have a fabric with a beige background, wine red flowers & olive-green leaves. I want to make a drape layer over the dress, which color should that layer be?
A layer on your dress sounds like a very chic design. Take a small fabric swatch of both colors and hold them up to your fabric to see if one looks better than the other. If you can determine which looks best by holding up the swatches you have the answer to your question. If you can’t tell after testing both colors with the fabric for your dress try using the color that is the smallest amount in the print in the fabric for the layer. For example if there is a smaller amount of the green color in the fabric go with that color for your layer. Another option might be to use the beige background color for your layer. You will need to experiment. A lot depends on the style of your dress and how you plan to apply the layer over your dress.
