Pearls are classic, beautiful, refined and prestigious. They are thought to convey good taste, wisdom, security, reliable and glamour.  Throughout the Ages and even today, powerful and famous women have worn pearls.

Pearls are a go to for public appearances. Royalty, the Queen of England is always being photographed wearing pearls and women in power, such as  White House women: Dolly Madison, Barbara Bush, Jackie O, Michele Obama all styled their outfits with pearls. Pearls are also the political jewelry of choice.  Nancy Pelosi, Madeline Albright, Kamala Harris and many others all like to wear pearls.

Saltwater pearls are created by oysters in saltwater and freshwater pearls are created in mussels in freshwater.

There are two types of pearls natural and cultured.  A natural pearl is created when an irritant enters a mollusk (shell) naturally. They are extremely rare and very expensive. A cultured pearl is created when a tiny foreign object is inserted into a mollusk. Layers of nacre (pearl) begin to build inside the shell depending on the type of mollusk. It can take from six months to seven years for a pearl to form.

Pearls Are a Gift From the Sea
Pearls are a gift from the sea. Always in style, pearls are timeless. They have been around and valued since ancient Egyptian times when they were found by fishermen accidentally. Today the pearl industry is a multi-billion-dollar business. Elegance and in some cases rarity have made pearls a traditional sign of wealth.

How should you clean pearls?
Clean your pearls by wiping them off with a slightly damp cloth. If you think they look dingy put in a dish of water (1/2 cup water) with one teaspoon of baking soda. Rinse thoroughly in clear water and lay them flat to dry before you put them away. Moisture will strengthen the silk threading. Store your pearls in a soft cloth away from sunlight and heat. Pearls can lose their luster if they are not exposed to air. Whether your pearls are cultured or simulated, special care is required when it comes to caring for them.
