Black dresses are a holiday staple reflecting the modern woman and can be fun, au courant, and free-spirited. The LBD (Little Black Dress) still remains the ultimate wardrobe staple after fifty years. Audrey Hepburn is responsible for putting it on the fashion map when she wore the glamorous black Givenchy cocktail dress in the “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” movie. Alive and well today the LBD is not always as serious as the one worn by Ms. Hepburn.

The modern LBD can be leather and / or lace, torn, stretched, transparent or have an exaggerated shape or a masculine twist. Like the modern woman a black dress can go many places, it is easy to wear, chic, fashionable and in good taste. All you need is one classic style black dress to get you through the parties and festivities of the season, but you can’t have too many!! Change your accessories (jewelry, stockings, handbag, & belts) when you wear your LBD and you can achieve many new looks and feel confident.

Believe it or not black clothing was extremely expensive and unaffordable for most women. The reason being was that it was very costly and labor intensive to dye fabric black. There were rules for dyeing black fabrics and laws that specified who could wear black. Only the wealthy could to wear black clothing and black clothing became a status symbol. A synthetic black dye was created at the end of the 19th century that made black fabric affordable for the modern woman. In 1926 Chanel popularized the LBD (little Black Dress).
