Don’t go without stockings to a dinner dance. Stockings give you a more polished look and are appropriate for dance venues. With a red dress you can wear ultra sheer nude color or stockings with silver shimmer with your pewter color shoes. Do a mirror test with the nude color and stockings with the silver shimmer hose to see which looks best with your dress and shoes.  Bare legs look unattractive unless they have a beautiful color and the weather is warm.
