Can I wear a cocktail dress to a black tie event?
A cocktail dress is acceptable today for a black tie event. Today a cocktail dress is considered a modern choice by young women for a formal event however long gowns are considered traditional attire for formal events.
Black tie events are formal affairs and many women prefer to wear floor length gowns. That being said for a black tie invitation to the White House or an equally important venue a long gown is preferred.
