Can I wear a cocktail dress for a birthday party? The party is in June in Millbrook, New York.

A cocktail dress is appropriate for a birthday party if it is a dressy or semi-formal event or in the evening. Millbrook is a small country village 80 miles north of Manhattan and not as formal as New York City.

Usually, summer weekends in the country are more casual than dressy. Birthdays are celebrations. Separates, or a colorful summer cotton or linen dress that you can dress up with jewelry and accessories are options. A maxi dress with sandals might work. If possible check with the host or hostess to get the dress code. It is always better to be under dressed than overdressed.
