A brother’s wedding is a special occasion to celebrate. Definitely a dark color suit (black, navy or gray) is appropriate for your brother’s wedding. However if black-tie is specified on the invitation you should wear a tuxedo. Black tie optional means you can wear a suit or a tuxedo.
For an engagement party your should ask the host or hostess what the dress code is. If it at a casual venue you might want to wear jeans or pants with a sports jacket. If the engagement event is at a nice restaurant you can wear a suit.
