Can I wear a black velvet dress to a Fall wedding?
Can I wear a black velvet dress to a Fall wedding? It’s black-tie.
A black velvet dress is awesome! Velvet can be a heavy fabric but there are many new lightweight stretchy velvet fabrics today. If your black velvet dress is made with a lightweight velvet fabric it is appropriate for a formal black tie wedding in the Fall.
It would be inappropriate and very uncomfortable to wear an outfit in heavy velvet in warm weather climates. A cocktail or floor-length dress with velvet trim would be fabulous in the fall or warm weather for a black-tie wedding. Once upon a time velvet was for the holiday season, now it is acceptable to wear all year round. Velvet jackets, cover-ups and accessories such as shoes, belts, etc. are more popular in warmer climates. Use common sense and check the weather when deciding if your black velvet dress is appropriate for the event.

Dressing Tips for Wedding Guests
Wedding guests want to look stylish and be in good taste. Knowing what type of wedding you will be attending is the first step. Is it a casual backyard wedding? A beach wedding? A barn wedding? A formal wedding? or a semi-formal wedding?
What kind of dress do you wear to a black-tie formal event?
A black-tie affair is considered a formal event. Years ago when you were invited to a black-tie or formal event women were expected to wear a floor-length gown. Long dresses are still correct today, especially for very formal events. However cocktail dresses are now considered appropriate and modern for most black-tie affairs / formal events. Exceptions might be a Royal black-tie affair or Presidential Ball when a floor-length is a better choice. Dressy pants and tops are also appropriate black-tie apparel today. If you know the hostess you may want to discuss what the expected attire is for the event. Choose what suits you, your legs and your relative age.
