What’s a “bias cut” dress?
A “bias-cut” dress is made by a technique, used by dress-makers, for cutting fabric on a diagonal angle / grain (at 45 degrees) of the fabric. Cutting fabric on the bias gives fabric more stretch to drape softly and create a slinky silhouette. A bias cut dress accentuates body lines and curves giving the garment a sexy, seductive, sleek, flattering and body-skimming look. The” bias cut” dress is without a center front closing. It was created by Madeleine Vionnet, a revolutionary designer. This style is sometimes referred to as the”Vionnet body line”. “The dress must not hung on the body but follow its lines. When a woman smiles the dress must smile with her.” — Madeleine Vionnet. The bias cut dress was the first original dress style in modern fashion history. It requires more fabric and usually leaves more waste and depends on more time and skill for cutting and construction.
