Are ankle-length dresses appropriate on a 5′ 3″ diva?
Are ankle-length dresses appropriate on a 5′ 3″ diva? I purchased a great Chiara Boni robe dress (petite) for a wedding. In the photo the model is wearing the dress about mid-calf. I am only 5’3” and the dress comes to the top of my ankles. Should I have it hemmed or is this longer length ok?
In general short girls that are petite can wear mini dresses that are 3-4 inches above the knee, and top or mid-knee length skirts and dresses. Top of the knee dresses look youthful. Ankle-length dresses in a solid color and straight skirt can flatter petite ladies if they have a slim body type.
Some style dresses may or may not work as ankle-length but try your dress on and do a mirror test to see how it looks. If you think it looks good on you wear it as is. If you don’t think it looks good on you have it shortened to around knee length.

What is the proper skirt length in relation to your knees?
There is no one skirt length that is proper for everyone. Everyone has to experiment and check their mirror to see what length(s) is most flattering on them. Height, weight, age, and skirt style have to be taken into consideration when choosing a proper skirt length. In general tall women can wear longer length skirts (mid-calf) and short women look better in shorter skirts around knee length or a little above the knee 2″ to 4″. Your weight is another factor in determining a proper skirt length. Thin women can wear knee-length skirts but heavier women look better in skirts that are just below the knee. As you age your knees and legs change and you may prefer a little longer skirt length that covers part or all of your knees. Young women can wear shorter skirts because their legs usually look great. Knee-length skirts that fit properly work for most women and are in good taste.
What hem length is best for women under 5 ‘ 4″?
The hem length of your dress or skirt can make or break your outfit and your appearance. The best hem length for anyone depends on their age, body type, and height. In general someone under 5 feet, 4 inches looks best when their hem hits mid-knee or a little shorter (1-2 inches above the knee). Usually, anyone under 21 can go shorter if they have a slim figure, good-looking knees, and attractive legs. Hemlines above the knees look great on most divas if they wear them with opaque tights.
Tip: Females under 5 feet 4 inches and overweight should forget about wearing dresses and skirts. Classic dark pants with a dark top will be more flattering.
